Shame already displayed plenty of ambition and a penchant for drama on Songs of Praise, but they're twice as potent on Drunk Tank Pink.Though it's named for the color used to subdue violently inebriated prisoners, there's little soothing about the band's second album; in fact, by comparison, their debut sounds almost staid. There's no better example than the back-half medley of "Great Dog" into "6/1" into "Harsh Degrees". Long may they reign there. ‘Born To Luton’ completely switches from jagged, insistent riff to half-speed and drifting melodies, gloomily reflecting Steen’s longing in the lines: “When are you coming back?/ When are you coming home?” ‘Station Wagon’, meanwhile, mirrors ‘Songs Of Praise’’s final track ‘Angie’ by clocking in well over six minutes. But Ford's mix effectively renders his voice as another instrument. That leveling-off allows for the band to come into their own.
